Gig Workers 5 Hours Nation Wide Strike

The gig workers union is demanding higher payouts and relief from mounting fuel expenses.

The Gig & Platform Service Workers Union (GIPSWU) has called for a temporary nationwide strike on Saturday over the hike in fuel prices and low wages.

It has urged cab drivers and delivery partners associated with app-based platforms to suspend services between 12 noon and 5pm, demanding higher payouts and relief from mounting fuel expenses.

App-based drivers and delivery workers are bracing for a financial blow after the government on Friday increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs 3 per litre.

According to the union, the increase in fuel prices will directly impact India’s 1.2 crore gig workers. It is also likely to trigger large-scale migration among gig workers.

“Gig & Platform Service Union (GIPSWU) demands increase in per-kilometre service rates from the government and digital gig platforms following hike in petrol, diesel and LPG gas prices.

Rise in petrol and diesel prices will become a cause of concern and migration among gig workers.

The direct impact of the increase in petrol and diesel prices will fall upon 1.2 crore gig workers,” a statement released by the union read.
