Jammu-Srinagar Highway Traffic Advisory 25th Sep 2026,NH-44 Traffic Update & Travel Guidelines

 

The Traffic Police Headquarters, J&K, Jammu/Srinagar has issued a detailed traffic advisory for commuters travelling on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) and other important roads in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the advisory, slow traffic movement was observed on NH-44 from 23 September 2026 at 4:00 PM to 24 September 2026 at 4:00 PM. The traffic situation was attributed to several factors, including single-lane traffic at vulnerable stretches, movement of nomadic herds and ongoing road construction work.

Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys carefully and follow instructions issued by the Traffic Police and road authorities. The advisory also highlights specific restrictions and movement timings for different categories of vehicles.

Slow Traffic Movement Reported on Jammu-Srinagar NH-44

Traffic Police reported slow movement on NH-44 due to single-lane traffic at vulnerable stretches of the road at Dwal, Udhampur.

Traffic was being regulated in a controlled manner, with the advisory indicating that commuters could experience delays of around 30 to 40 minutes at the affected location.

The movement of vehicles has also been affected by the presence of nomadic herds travelling between Nashri and Nachlana and their movement towards Banihal-Nachlana.

Commuters travelling on the highway have therefore been advised to maintain patience and follow the instructions of traffic personnel deployed along the route.

Nomadic Herd Movement Affects Traffic

The Traffic Police advisory states that the movement of nomadic herds has contributed to traffic congestion on NH-44.

Drivers travelling through affected stretches have been advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary overtaking. The movement of livestock along the highway can create temporary traffic interruptions, particularly at vulnerable and narrow stretches.

Jammu-Srinagar NH-44: Construction Work May Cause Delays

Ongoing construction work is another major factor affecting traffic movement on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

The advisory mentions widening work being undertaken by NHAI along the Digdole-Khooni Halla axis on the Jammu-Srinagar NHW.

Because of the ongoing work, the movement of Kashmir-bound oil tankers loaded with inflammable material has been restricted during a specified period.

The advisory states that the movement of such tankers will be restricted between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM. After 7:00 PM, the tankers may be allowed to move beyond Chenani, subject to the prevailing traffic situation and instructions from traffic authorities.

Truck operators have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid inconvenience and ensure their safety.

Advice for Goods Carriers and Heavy Motor Vehicles

The Traffic Police has also issued specific instructions for goods carrier and Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) operators.

Operators carrying fresh and perishable stock have been advised to load their vehicles in accordance with the advisory issued by Traffic Police Headquarters from time to time.

This is particularly important because ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal may result in traffic interruptions and delays.

HMV operators have also been requested to :

Avoid overloading their vehicles.

Carry sufficient fuel during their journey.

Check the fitness of their vehicles before starting the journey.

Follow traffic instructions on the Jammu-Srinagar NH-44.

Avoid unnecessary stoppages along the highway.

The Traffic Police has specifically urged vehicle owners to double-check vehicle fitness and fuel levels before undertaking the journey.

Commuters Advised to Avoid Unnecessary Halts

Passengers and motorists travelling between Ramban and Banihal, particularly near landslide-prone areas, have been advised to avoid unnecessary halts.

Unnecessary stoppages can contribute to traffic congestion and may create difficulties for other road users, especially on stretches where traffic is already being regulated because of road construction or restricted carriageway movement.

Traffic Plan and Advisory for September 25, 2026

The Traffic Police has also issued a traffic plan for September 25, 2026, covering the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and other major routes.

Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44)

Subject to fair weather and better road conditions, LMVs, passenger vehicles and private cars/HMVs carrying goods may be allowed to travel from Jammu towards Srinagar and from Srinagar towards Jammu, depending on the prevailing traffic situation.

Commuters have been advised to follow lane discipline while driving. The advisory specifically warns that wrong-lane driving can cause congestion.

The Traffic Control Unit (TCU) Jammu/Srinagar will coordinate with TCU Ramban regarding road conditions and traffic regulation.

Travellers are advised to check the latest traffic status before beginning their journey rather than relying solely on the planned movement schedule.

Army Security Forces Convoy Movement

The advisory also covers the movement of Army and Security Forces vehicles.

Subject to fair weather and good road conditions, security forces vehicles may be allowed to move in both directions on the Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44), depending on the traffic situation.

The advisory states that security forces vehicles will move after confirmation of the NHW status from TCU Ramban.

This means civilian traffic may experience temporary regulation or delays during security-force convoy movement.

Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag NH-244 Traffic Advisory

A separate advisory has been issued for the Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag NH-244.

According to the order referred to in the traffic advisory, LMVs, passenger vehicles and private cars may be allowed to travel after obtaining clearance from the road maintenance agency and subject to fair weather and good road conditions.

Traffic movement is permitted from both sides on specified stretches.

Vehicles travelling from Poonch towards Srinagar and in the opposite direction may be regulated according to the prevailing road conditions.

The advisory specifies movement windows between 0700 hours and 1600 hours for certain stretches, while traffic from Daksum towards Kishtwar is permitted between 0900 hours and 1600 hours.

No vehicle will be allowed to proceed after the prescribed closing time.

Traffic Control Units at Jammu, Ramban and Srinagar will coordinate regarding the status of the road and traffic movement.

SSG Road Traffic Advisory

The Traffic Police has also issued instructions concerning the SSG Road.

According to the advisory, subject to fair weather and good road conditions, LMVs will be allowed to move from both sides on the Sonamarg-Gumri road.

However, vehicles travelling from Sonamarg towards Kargil and from Minamarg towards Srinagar will be subject to specific movement restrictions and traffic-control instructions.

The advisory states that vehicles will be allowed to move from Sonamarg towards Kargil and from Minamarg towards Srinagar only after receiving the required green signal from the concerned authorities.

HMVs will not be allowed to move from Minamarg towards Srinagar during the specified restricted period.

Drivers have also been advised to carry anti-skid chains while travelling on the slippery sections of the road.

The Traffic Police has further directed the TCU Srinagar and PCR Kargil to coordinate and inform road users about the prevailing road conditions.

The movement of SSG convoy vehicles should be regulated in such a manner that normal civilian traffic is not unnecessarily disturbed.

Mughal Road Traffic Advisory

The advisory also contains instructions for the Mughal Road (NH-701A).

Subject to fair weather and good road conditions, and after clearance from the road maintenance agency, LMVs including passenger vehicles and private cars may be permitted to travel on the Mughal Road.

Vehicles may be allowed to travel from both sides, including:

Poonch towards Shopian

Shopian towards Poonch

The advisory specifies regulated movement timings for different stretches.

Vehicles travelling from Chandimand/Chandim? towards Shopian and from Heerpora towards Poonch are subject to the specified traffic schedule.

The advisory further states that no vehicle should be permitted after the prescribed cut-off timings.

The Traffic Control Units at Jammu and Srinagar have been directed to follow the directions issued by the concerned authorities regarding the road.

Traffic Police Advisory for Commuters

The Traffic Police has urged people to undertake journeys only after confirming the status of the road from the concerned Traffic Control Units.

This is particularly important because road conditions can change quickly due to weather, landslides, construction activity, traffic congestion and security-force movement.

Commuters are advised to check the latest road status before starting their journey and follow instructions issued by traffic personnel.
