Earlier today, AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj and party MLA Sanjeev Jha were detained by Delhi Police on Friday after they reached Jantar Mantar to join a protest against chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

“Despite the peaceful protest, Delhi Police arrested MLA Sanjeev Jha ji and Saurabh. But the movement will continue!,” reads offical AAP X post.

Bharadwaj, on X, later informed that more than 500 people had reached Jantar Mantar ahead of the scheduled protest. “GenZ rocks,” he wrote.

According to News agency sources, mobile internet services have been disrupted in the Jantar Mantar area, with some users receiving a message stating that internet services have been suspended in the area “as per government instructions” until further notice.

A police source said around 700 SFI members attempting to reach Jantar Mantar were stopped at the Ashoka Road roundabout, with several detained.

SFI general secretary Aishe Ghosh said several SFI and DYFI activists were detained. NSUI activists were also taken into custody, while some protesters were seen crossing barricades on Firoz Shah Road.

Authorities imposed restrictions around the protest site, with internet services suspended in the area. Entry and exit were also closed at several Delhi Metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat and Jantar Mantar, amid heightened security.

The Delhi Police had earlier denied permission for the proposed protest, citing security concerns and the expected turnout.
