Magisterial Inquiry Ordered Into Shopian Encounter; Public Invited to Submit Evidence
*Inquiry to Probe Circumstances Leading to Death of LeT Terrorist Killed During July 4–8 Operation; Statements, Documents and Digital Evidence Sought*
The District Administration Shopian has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the encounter that took place in the Chanapora area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district between July 4 and July 8, 2026, during which a terrorist affiliated with the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) outfit was killed.
According to a public notice issued by the Office of the District Magistrate, Shopian, a copy of which lies with news agency, a formal magisterial inquiry has been initiated in connection with FIR No. 136/2026 registered at Police Station Shopian under Sections 7/27 of the Arms Act, Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Sections 13, 16, 18, 20 and 38 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The notice states that, pursuant to Order No. DCS/THQ/26/51 dated July 16, 2026, the Additional District Magistrate, Shopian, has been appointed as the Inquiry Officer to ascertain the cause and circumstances leading to the death of the deceased terrorist.
The administration has invited members of the public possessing any information, eyewitness accounts, documentary material or electronic evidence related to the encounter to appear before the Inquiry Officer at the Mini Secretariat, Arhama, Shopian, between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM on any working day within 15 days from the publication of the notice.
The public notice further states that written representations and digital evidence may also be submitted through the official email of the Additional District Magistrate before the expiry of the stipulated period.
The inquiry is being conducted as part of the legal process to examine the circumstances surrounding the encounter, the notice added. (JKNS)
