Sonam Wangchuk Shifted to Hospital After 20-Day Hunger Strike at Jantar Mantar: Delhi Police

High Court Order, Medical Advice Prompt Hospitalisation; Security Tightened Around Protest Site

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar for the past 20 days, was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday after his health deteriorated, in compliance with the directions of the Delhi High Court and based on expert medical advice, police officials said.

Wangchuk was moved to the hospital following orders of the Hon’ble High Court after doctors expressed concern over his declining health condition.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Sachin Sharma said the activist was shifted to an appropriate government hospital for necessary medical intervention and is currently under medical supervision.

In a statement shared on social media, the DCP said, “As per orders of the Hon’ble High Court and on expert medical advice due to the deteriorating health condition of Sonam Wangchuk, he has been shifted to the hospital for essential medical care. We request the protestors at Jantar Mantar to peacefully vacate the place at the earliest.”

Official sources said Wangchuk has been admitted to the emergency ward of Safdarjung Hospital. He is conscious and his vital parameters are stable.

Following his removal from the protest site, security was tightened in and around Jantar Mantar and other parts of the New Delhi district to maintain law and order after a brief commotion during the shifting process.

Police have appealed to the remaining protesters to maintain peace and cooperate with the authorities. (JKNS)
