Traffic Advisory Issued for Srinagar Jammu Highway

Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) is likely to remain slow at several stretches on Tuesday due to road damage, ongoing construction work and the movement of nomadic herds, the Traffic Police Headquarters, Jammu and Kashmir, said in its advisory for October 20.

The advisory follows slow traffic movement between 4 pm on October 18 and 4 pm on October 19, caused by single-lane stretches and an uneven road surface at Dawal in Udhampur, another single-lane section between Marog and Kishtwari Pather, two vehicle breakdowns at Nashri and Ramsoo, and the movement of seven nomadic herds crossing the Banihal-Nachlana stretch.

The Traffic Police said movement on the Marog-Kishtwari Pather section could continue to be affected by the movement of nomadic herds. Commuters have been advised to maintain lane discipline and avoid overtaking.

Passengers and light motor vehicle (LMV) operators have been advised to travel on NH-44 during daylight hours and avoid night journeys due to the risk of shooting stones and landslides, the movement of nomads from the Valley and construction work between Ramban and Banihal.

The advisory also imposes restrictions on the movement of Kashmir-bound oil and gas tankers along the Digdol-Khooni Nalla stretch during daytime, between 7 am and 7 pm, owing to widening work being carried out by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The restriction also takes into account the prohibition on carrying inflammable material through tunnels.

Upward-bound tankers will be allowed to proceed beyond Chenani only after 5 pm, up to 5 am. Operators have been asked to plan their journeys accordingly.

For October 20, the Traffic Police said passenger LMVs, private cars, passenger vehicles and goods carriers would be permitted to travel in both directions on NH-44, subject to favourable weather and better road conditions. Security Forces convoys will also be allowed to move in both directions after confirming the highway’s status with the Traffic Control Unit (TCU) Ramban.

Goods carriers transporting fresh perishables and livestock have been advised to follow the directions issued by the Traffic Police Headquarters. Motorists have also been urged to avoid unnecessary stops between Ramban and Banihal, particularly near landslide-prone and shooting-stone areas.

Movement on other highways

On the Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag road (NH-244), passenger LMVs and private cars will be allowed in both directions, subject to favourable weather, suitable road conditions and clearance from the road maintenance agency, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
