Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to visit India next month for the BRICS summit in New Delhi, potentially marking his first trip to the country in seven years and signalling a further thaw in relations between the two Asian rivals.

India will host the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. Xi’s expected attendance is likely to draw attention not just for the summit’s agenda, but also for what it could signal about efforts by New Delhi and Beijing to stabilise ties after the deadly border clashes of 2020.

Xi is likely to be accompanied by a delegation of around 400 officials, Reuters reported. That would be more than double the size of the Chinese delegation during his last visit to India in 2019, when fewer than 200 officials accompanied him.

“Chinese officials are busy finalising hotels and security protocols,” one of the Indian sources with direct knowledge of the preparations told Reuters.
