1. J&K Begins Census 2027 Population Enumeration
The second phase of Census 2027 began in the snow-bound areas of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on 17 August 2026. Digital self-enumeration has also been opened for eligible residents, with the self-enumeration window continuing till 31 August.
Exam Point: Census 2027 is India’s first digital census exercise.
2. Budha Amarnath Yatra Begins From Jammu
J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the first batch of pilgrims for the annual Shri Budha Amarnath Ji Yatra from Jammu on 17 August. The pilgrimage is held at the ancient shrine in Poonch district.

3. NTA Orders Re-Exam for Three UGC-NET Subjects
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has ordered a fresh examination for English, Commerce and Sociology papers of UGC-NET June 2026 after an expert review identified multiple errors in the question papers.
The re-examination will be conducted on 9 and 10 September 2026, and candidates will not have to pay an additional fee. The remaining 84 subjects are unaffected.
4. Indian Army Chief Gets Honorary General Rank in Nepal
Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth was conferred the honorary rank of General of the Nepali Army by Nepal President Ram Chandra Paudel in Kathmandu on 17 August. The honour reflects the longstanding military relationship between India and Nepal.
5. NIELIT Launches CYBER KUSHTI 2026
The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) launched CYBER KUSHTI 2026, a national cybersecurity and AI hackathon designed to test human judgement, risk assessment and threat prioritisation rather than simply detection speed.

6. India to Host BRICS Environment Meetings
India is hosting the BRICS Environment Working Group meetings in New Delhi on 17–18 August 2026. The meetings focus on cooperation among BRICS nations on environmental and climate-related issues.
7. India Post Delivers Tiranga by Drone
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, India Post delivered the National Flag by drone from Mandi to Rehardhar in Himachal Pradesh ahead of Independence Day. The initiative demonstrated the potential of drone technology for delivering postal items to remote and difficult-to-reach areas.
8. J&K–Srinagar-Jammu Highway Hit by Landslide
Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was disrupted after a landslide occurred on the Darmathal-Dewal stretch in Udhampur on Monday.
9. KVS-NVS Tier-II Results Released
The CBSE declared phase-wise KVS and NVS Tier-II results 2026 for several posts, including PGT, TGT, Finance Officer and Stenographer, on 17 August.
10. Supreme Court Seeks Compensation From J&K Administration
The Supreme Court directed the Jammu & Kashmir administration to pay compensation and rental dues concerning land that had allegedly been forcibly taken in 1953 for a police station.
