1. India Launches Grasslands and Natural Ecosystems Guide
India launched its first Guide to Grasslands and Other Open Natural Ecosystems (ONEs) of India at the 17th Session of the UNCCD COP17 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The guide aims to improve understanding and conservation of India’s open natural ecosystems.
2. Electoral Literacy Clubs 2.0 Launched
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar launched Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELC 2.0) in Patna with the tagline “Learn Democracy. Lead Democracy.” The initiative targets ELCs across schools, colleges and universities to strengthen electoral awareness among young citizens.
3. India Signs ₹1,943 Crore MQ-9B SeaGuardian Deal
The Ministry of Defence signed a contract worth approximately ₹1,943 crore with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems for leasing two MQ-9B SeaGuardian remotely piloted aircraft systems to the Indian Navy for 30 months.
4. India-Thailand Military Exercise MAITREE-XV Begins
The Indian Army contingent departed for Exercise MAITREE-XV, the 15th edition of the India-Thailand joint military exercise. The exercise is scheduled from 18 to 31 August 2026 in Thailand and focuses on joint counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations.
5. 210 Indian Peacekeepers Receive UN Medals
A total of 210 Indian peacekeepers, including six women and seven staff officers, received UN medals for exceptional service in Juba, South Sudan. India continues to be among the major contributors to UN peacekeeping operations.
6. Census 2027 Self-Enumeration Begins in J&K
Jammu and Kashmir began digital self-enumeration for Census 2027 in 16 snow-bound districts from 17 to 31 August 2026. The digital questionnaire contains around 40 questions and includes caste-related categories.
7. NIA Court Issues Non-Bailable Warrant
A special NIA court in Jammu issued a non-bailable warrant against a Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba operational commander in a terrorism-related case.

9. India-Sri Lanka Test Match
In the first India-Sri Lanka Test at Galle, India established a 178-run first-innings lead. Devdutt Padikkal scored 167, while Manav Suthar took four wickets on his Test debut. Ravindra Jadeja also reached the milestone of 350 Test wickets and 4,000 Test runs.

India’s men’s hockey team played China to a draw at the Hockey World Cup, with reports highlighting India’s relative inexperience in the tournament.
11. Arsenal Win Community Shield
Arsenal defeated Manchester City 3–0 to win the Community Shield.

World Photography Day was observed on 19 August, while preparations and related events were in focus around 18 August. The day celebrates photography and its role in documenting people, history and culture.
