1. World Tourism Day 2026 Observed on 27 September
World Tourism Day is being observed on 27 September 2026. This year’s theme is “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.” The global observance is being hosted in El Salvador.
The theme highlights the growing role of digital technology and Artificial Intelligence in transforming tourism, improving visitor experiences and supporting sustainable tourism development.
In India, tourism contributed 5.22% to GDP and supported around 8.46 crore jobs in 2023–24, according to the Press Information Bureau.
2. Asian Games 2026: India Continues Medal Campaign
The 2026 Asian Games are underway in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Indian athletes are competing across several disciplines, including athletics, archery, shooting, badminton and squash.
On September 27, India’s schedule included athletes such as Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh, Rahi Sarnobat, PV Sindhu, Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh in different events.

3. Hurricane Polo Intensifies Near Mexico
Hurricane Polo has been a major weather event in the eastern Pacific. The U.S. National Hurricane Center reported that Polo had reached Category 5 intensity before subsequently weakening.
On September 27, the National Hurricane Center reported maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (195 km/h) and issued watches and warnings for parts of Baja California and northwestern Mexico.
The storm highlights the importance of monitoring rapid intensification of tropical cyclones and improving early-warning systems.
4. BRICS 2026 Summit Held in New Delhi
India hosted the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from 12–13 September 2026 under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
The New Delhi Declaration focused on cooperation among BRICS members in areas including economic and financial cooperation, political and security issues, sustainable development and multilateral reforms.
India held the BRICS Chairship in 2026, while China is set to chair BRICS in 2027.
5. India at the United Nations
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the United Nations General Assembly during the current high-level session. His remarks focused on global challenges, supply chains, technology, finance and the concerns of developing countries.
The UN General Assembly remains an important platform for discussions on international cooperation, global security, development and multilateral institutions.
6. Western Ghats Environmental Sensitivity Area
The issue of the Western Ghats Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) remains an important environmental topic. Karnataka’s position on the Kasturirangan Committee recommendations has been highlighted in current-affairs discussions on September 27.
