Widespread Rains Likely Across J&K: MeT

The Meteorological Department on Sunday forecast an increase in rainfall activity across Jammu and Kashmir over the next few days, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds and possible flash floods in vulnerable areas of the Jammu division.

According to a weather bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, isolated light rain and thunderstorms are expected over the Kashmir division during the next 24 hours, while fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are likely in the Jammu division.

Rainfall activity is expected to increase during the subsequent two days, with widespread precipitation likely at several places across the Union Territory.

The MeT department said isolated heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph, is likely over the Jammu division from July 6 to 8.

It also warned of possible landslides, mudslides, shooting stones and flash floods at vulnerable locations during the period.

In the Kashmir division, isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph are expected on July 7, 8 and 11.

Meanwhile, maximum temperatures remained two to four degrees Celsius above normal at most places in Kashmir during the past 24 hours, while several areas of the Jammu division recorded temperatures up to three degrees above normal.

Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 34 degrees Celsius, the highest in Kashmir, while Kathua was the hottest place in the Jammu division at 38.2 degrees Celsius.

Night temperatures also remained above normal at several places. Gulmarg recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Kashmir at 13.2 degrees Celsius, while Bhaderwah recorded 18.7 degrees Celsius in the Jammu division.

Kathua received 11.2 mm of rainfall during the period.

For July 6, the weather office forecast mainly clear to partly cloudy skies in Srinagar, with the maximum temperature likely to hover around 33 degrees Celsius. Jammu is expected to remain partly cloudy with chances of light rain and thunderstorms.
