JERC Recruitment 2026
As early trends indicate a strong surge for the BJP in West Bengal, the spotlight has shifted to who could become the state’s next Chief Minister. The party is leading on nearly 200 seats, while the TMC appears to be trailing around the 100-seat mark.
Unlike in some other states, the BJP has not officially declared a chief ministerial face in West Bengal. However, with the party heading towards a decisive victory, several leaders are now being discussed as potential contenders based on their political standing and organisational influence.
Here are the likely contenders in for CM post.
Suvendu Adhikari
Suvendu Adhikari is currently the most prominent BJP face in West Bengal politics and the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly. His political significance stems from his strong organisational base in districts like East Midnapore and his ability to mobilise support in key constituencies. He was once a close aide of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Trinamool Congress and held influential ministerial positions in the state government. However, ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections, he broke away from the TMC and joined the BJP, marking one of the most high-profile political exits in recent Bengal politics. The fallout between Suvendu Adhikari and Mamata Banerjee remains one of the most defining rivalries in the state’s political landscape, with both leaders frequently engaging in sharp political confrontation. This direct challenge to Mamata’s leadership is a key reason why Suvendu is widely seen as the BJP’s most viable Chief Ministerial face in Bengal.
Dilip Ghosh
Dilip Ghosh is a senior BJP leader and former state president who played a major role in expanding the party’s presence in West Bengal. During his tenure, the BJP significantly strengthened its organisational structure and emerged as a strong opposition force, particularly in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Known for his aggressive political style and grassroots outreach, he remains an influential veteran figure in the party despite no longer holding the state presidency.
Shamik Bhattacharya
Shamik Bhattacharya, the current West Bengal BJP president, represents the organisational leadership of the party in the state. His focus is largely on internal restructuring, booth-level management, and election strategy. He is considered more of a strategist and administrator rather than a mass electoral face.

Agnimitra Paul, BJP MLA from Asansol South and national spokesperson, is an emerging leader in the party’s Bengal unit. A former fashion designer, she has built visibility through national media appearances and is often projected as part of the BJP’s effort to promote women leadership in the state. While not a top CM contender, she is considered a rising political voice.
Shankar Ghosh
Shankar Ghosh, BJP MLA from Siliguri, is an important regional leader from North Bengal. He has been active in local mobilisation and organisational work in the region. His influence is more regional than statewide, but he is part of the broader leadership group being watched for future roles within the party.
