Home Secretary visit to Lal Chowk – broadcasting message of changed Kashmir

Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan’s visit to iconic Lal Chowk area in Srinagar on Monday evening might not have been part of his official itinerary but it underlined that how the countrymen are excited over the changes that have taken place in Kashmir in the last few years.

Whether it was on his schedule or not, but his visit to the area made a big statement. Those things have changed and the most important functionaries of the Government of India can visit Lal Chowk to see its newly acquired grandeur in a terror-free atmosphere, breathe the air of New Kashmir. It was an inspirational moment, which also served as a reminder of the journey that Kashmir has travelled toward peace in the last five years.

This message got further reinforced as the status in the chequered history of Kashmir being a nerve center of the Valley’s thinking and its politics remains unchanged. The dimensions of the aspirations and politics have changed though. This nerve center is brand ambassador of Kashmir, which remains where it was, but beams light of India in Kashmir.

It is not that Home Secretary was the first important functionary to visit this historic Lal Chowk which over the past several decades has seen many seasons of Kashmir’s history, but his visit highlighted the fact that how the country views this landmark of Kashmir integrated into the thought process of the country . It has now acquired the status of India’s lasting standing in Kashmir – unshakeable and firm.

The tricolour atop it or the clock tower draped in the three colours of the Indian national flag , symbolize the connect of new India with new Kashmir where iconic places have become a beacon of new era where Kashmiri thoughts and aspirations have merged together striving Viksit Bharat.

The credit for transforming Lal Chowk and its messaging goes to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who worked 24×7 to free Kashmir from the tag of terrorism. Modi who as BJP General Secretary in January 1992 was the leading figure who hoisted Indian tricolour at the clock tower , better known as Ghantaghar in local parlance , to show his grit and determination as Indian to stand against all the subversive voices and actions . The act which he performed on January 26, 1992 of hoisting the national tricolour in freezing temperature has inspired those who watch and salute the spirit of Indian nationalism at this place of immense historic importance.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah looked after the minutest details of the transformation. He has ensured that Kashmir and its historic symbols become symbols of Indian nationalism by involving the locals in the construction and reconstruction of these iconic landmarks.

This vision was translated on the ground by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. He knew what it all required to be done and why Lal Chowk is important for messaging the idea of India having established itself in Kashmir where not long ago the secessionists had monopolized their narrative everywhere and Lal Chowk was among the places that broadcasted it. These things have been reversed. Home Secretary saw this transformation with his own eyes and since MHA is engaged in terror-free J&K, his eyewitness account is going to part of that.

The visit to Lal Chowk capped his meeting that he held earlier in the day to seek and give inputs on terror-free J&K. In the evening he visited the symbol of terror-free landmark of Kashmir.
