Kashmir higher reaches to receive snow during next 24 hours: MeT

The higher reaches of Kashmir Valley are likely to experience rain and snowfall during the next 24 hours, officials said.

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar on Sunday predicted light rain and snowfall over the higher reaches of Kashmir valley during the next 24 hours, officials said.

The MeT office said the weather will generally remain cloudy on Sunday, and there is a possibility of light rain and snow over the higher reaches and over the north and a few places in central Kashmir during the next 24 hours.

It said the weather will generally remain dry from November 12 to 14.

The possibility of another fresh spell of light rain and now over the higher reaches and at the scattered places of the Kashmir valley from November 15 to 16.

Kashmir weather independent observer Faizan Arif said a fresh weak Western disturbance (WD) is set to impact Jammu and Kashmir from Sunday night.

“Under its influence, light rain and snow is expected in some parts of Jammu and Kashmir and likely to continue till the early morning of November 12,” he said, adding “the impact of the WD will be mostly seen over the higher reaches of North Kashmir, Pir Panjal Range, and higher reaches of Bandipora and Ganderbal districts.”.

Arif said another WD, but weaker, is going to impact between November 14 and 16 and may cause light snowfall over a few higher reaches of Kashmir Valley.

The daytime temperatures are expected to fall by 2- 6°C; besides, there is a possibility of a significant dip in the nighttime temperatures from November 17 onwards, he said.

Kashmir is witnessing a long dry spell that led to the record low water level in the main river Jhelum and other tributaries of the valley.

Srinagar’s iconic Dal Lake and other parts of the valley are engulfed with mist and shallow fog amid cold weather conditions, forcing tourists and locals to wear warm clothes.

The minimum temperature recorded during the intervening nights of Saturday and Sunday in Srinagar was 3.6°C, and it was 1.7°C above normal for the summer capital during this period of season.

The maximum day temperature was recorded in Srinagar on Saturday at 21.6°C, and it was 4.3°C above normal, the MeT office said.
