No need to panic over rising influenza cases, says AIIMS expert

Influenza cases, particularly H1N1, have been rising in Delhi and parts of North India, but health experts have urged people not to panic. Former AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria said the increase is consistent with seasonal influenza activity and there is currently no indication of a new pandemic or a more dangerous strain.

Most infections are expected to remain mild and self-limiting, with patients generally recovering through adequate rest, fluids and symptomatic treatment. However, elderly people, young children, pregnant women and those with underlying health conditions are at greater risk of complications.

Doctors have advised people to maintain good hand hygiene, cover their mouth while coughing or sneezing, avoid crowded places when unwell and seek medical attention if symptoms such as persistent fever, breathlessness, chest discomfort, dehydration or worsening weakness develop.

Experts have also cautioned against taking antibiotics or antiviral medicines without medical advice, as most uncomplicated influenza infections are viral and do not require antibiotics.
