US President Donald Trump expressed confidence in India’s growing influence in West Asia, saying the country would continue to play a significant role under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Responding to a question by Network18 on India’s role in the region, Trump said India is an important global player and added that its relevance in West Asia would remain strong as long as Modi is at the helm. “I think India plays a big role in everything. As long as he (PM Narendra Modi) is the leader, India is going to play a big role,” he said.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Wednesday said he was “very much looking forward” to the upcoming meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian, France.

Speaking to CNN-News18 ahead of the bilateral engagement, Gor expressed optimism about the leaders’ interaction.

“We’re very much looking forward to it. The President will be there in about half an hour. Always happy to see you,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday interacted with leaders from Italy, European Union and Kenya during the second day of the G7 Summit in France.

He was seen speaking to European Council chief Antonio Costa, Kenyan President William Ruto and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Meanwhile, the official G7 page posted a picture of world leaders seated at a roundtable as the G7 session took place.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was seated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s left side while US President Donald Trump was on his right side.

Trade and strategic cooperation are expected to dominate talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on Wednesday as the two leaders meet on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France.

The discussions are likely to cover progress on a proposed bilateral trade deal, as well as deeper collaboration in defence, energy and critical minerals. Ahead of the formal meeting, Modi and Trump shared a brief interaction during a gathering of G7 leaders, their first in-person encounter in over a year.

The leaders of the G7 countries said on Wednesday they stand united to support Ukraine, including its territorial integrity, and agreed to increase the pressure on the Russian war economy.

G7 leaders have pledged to step up efforts to address high debt burdens among developing countries, including middle-income countries not currently eligible for a debt relief initiative launched by the broader Group of 20 large economies during the Covid-19 pandemic.

G7 host France is pushing partners to agree a statement on critical minerals on Wednesday that could include measures to help the West reduce its reliance on China and shield investors from counter-measures and dumping, diplomats said, Reuters reported.

The leaders will discuss securing mineral supply chains, a central theme of France’s G7 presidency, alongside a broader effort to remedy global economic imbalances on the final day of the June 15-17 summit in Evian-les-Bains.

China spooked the global economy last year when some industries nearly ground to a halt after Beijing imposed export curbs on permanent magnets made of rare earths — an episode which highlighted how reliant Western supply chains in the energy, defence and technology sectors are on these goods.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi introduced the ‘POWERR Asia’ framework to the leaders present at the G7 Summit and proposed strengthening global oil stockpiles in collaboration with the International Energy Agency.

During the discussion on West Asia, where she was joined by the leaders of Egypt, Qatar, and the UAE, the Japanese PM highlighted the importance of free and safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and introduced ‘POWERR Asia’ initiative of Japan.

The British government said on Tuesday it has secured £1.3 billion ($1.74 billion) in investments from French and Indian companies at the G7 summit, focused mainly on battery storage and clean power projects, according to Reuters.

The 52nd G7 Summit is being held in the French spa town of Evian-les-Bains from 15 to 17 June. The G7 includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, while the European Union has participated since 1981. India is attending as a guest country.

At the 52nd G7 Summit in France, G7 leaders have committed to intensifying joint action against global drug trafficking networks, money laundering operations and transnational organised crime, unveiling a series of measures aimed at strengthening maritime security, disrupting criminal finances and preventing the infiltration of public and private institutions by criminal groups.

In a declaration adopted in France, the leaders described the rapid expansion of global drug trafficking as a growing threat to national security, economic prosperity and democratic institutions.

At the 52nd G7 Summit in France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Evian, where he is set for a packed schedule of diplomatic engagements. On Wednesday, he is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump, to be held on the sidelines of the summit as India and the United States continue negotiations on a trade agreement.

The meeting comes days after three Indian mariners lost their lives on a commercial vessel targeted by the US Navy in the Strait of Hormuz.
